The project ran between November 2023 and May 2024.
The green transition necessitates utilizing resources in closed loops to reduce the reliance on new fossil-based materials. In this project Kappahl AB, Höganäs AB and RISE AB evaluated the possibility of reducing the carbon dioxide footprint from steel production by replacing fossil coal with a sustainably produced carbon made from discarded textiles and at the same time make more efficient use of available resources. The project goal was to investigate the technical and sustainability potential of using textile waste in the production of bio-based carbon for use in steel industry. By means of characterization of textiles, experimental pyrolysis testing of textile waste, posttreatment and CO2 reactivity analysis and sustainability evaluation the hypothesis was confirmed. The results indicated that the biocoal produced from the textile waste can meet the technical product and sustainability requirements for use in the steel production.
