100 % fossil-free structural boards and building elements

Category: Thematic calls

The project ran between June 2020 and June 2022.

The construction sector and materials used in construction are responsible for a large environmental footprint. With the over-arching goal to diminish this footprint, this project aimed at creating production processes for structural boards (plywood) and building elements (insulating, loadbearing) that are 100 % biobased. A novel adhesive, completely bio-based and the main component being based on feedstock from forest, was further characterized and validated in full-scale prototypes. The adhesive was void from added formaldehyde and any other toxic or environmentally detrimental substances and is free from fossil-derived raw materials. A fully circular use of these building products therefore becomes possible, both through reuse and through material recycling into secondary products.

The project partners have tested to replace fossil-based adhesives with biobased adhesives in plywood and construction elements. The project was successful.
